Content is king. Especially in the digital world, content is almost everything.
But even though we already know how vital content is, we still procrastinate on creating it.
For Rebel Tendencies such as myself, we take procrastination to a whole new level. We just don’t like doing something that we expect from ourselves or others. So what’s left to do?
Not all hope is lost for our tendency, however. There are strategies to combat Rebel procrastination. Just like there are always ways to do things your way.
As we know, when we have a Rebel Tendency, we can use these four strategies, according to Gretchen Rubin:
1 | Clarity
I always say the first step towards any endeavor is Assessment. Some questions you can ask yourself are:
When we remind ourselves of our purpose, we become much more inclined to create content that is in alignment with our values. And as a consequence, we’re also more motivated to take action. It’s hard not to move when you suddenly become aware of why you started in the first place. Your purpose is your compass that makes sure you keep moving in the right direction.
Movement is nothing without a compass.
2 | Convenience
How can you make things easier? Convenience, at first glance, seems to be the lazy person’s guide to life. But should we really care if others label us as lazy? I think we are meant to use whatever tools we have at our disposal to go after goals that matter for us regardless of whether we are judged or not.
Some questions that can help you apply the strategy of convenience during content creation:
Whatever your vibe is, roll with it. Because, at the end of the day, we all have to do what’s best for us. And sometimes that means picking out the most convenient ways for you to work.
3 | Identity
Rebels are nothing without their identity. At the very core, we love being identified as authentic or original. That’s why we resonate with being a Rebel so much: we don’t like expectations. We’re all for spontaneity and we depend on our identity to guide us in whatever work we have to do.
It’s not just reaching goals to cross them off our lists (although the sound of that is so rewarding). It’s about becoming the kind of person who checks those things on the list.
When we think to ourselves, “I’m a go-getter,” it becomes much easier for us to go after what we like, If we label ourselves as vlogger/ podcaster/ content creator, we step up to fill that role.
The number one question when it comes to content creation is:
4 | Other People
There’s nothing more motivating than to be different. At least, for me. Granted, there will always be things that we do that are somewhat similar with others but, essentially, we like to keep things… unexpected, but in a good way.
We’re not just trying to be different for the sake of being different though. We do believe that there are plenty of alternative ways to do things. And if we stick to the status quo all the time, our potential for growth becomes much more limited.
If we look deeper, however, we might discover or be reminded that different methods work for different people.
And although it’s fairly easy to Google what you should do nowadays to stand out and probably learn a couple of tricks here and there, asking ourselves about how we would approach a situation is much more insightful.
Some questions you can ask regarding being different as a content creator could be:
Blogging and the digital space is not oversaturated. Over-saturation is being marketed by people who are afraid of competition. But the truth is, there is no competition. We all bring unique strengths and experiences to the table and, thus, unique perspectives. There is only collaboration.
As a Rebel, we’re not necessarily doomed to be flaky, unreliable, or irresponsible.
Rebels can do whatever they want. And if that means setting systems in place to make sure that they show up consistently, then they’d gladly go for it as long as it aligns with who they perceive themselves to be.
Content creation isn’t solely dependent on motivation. Like most other types of work, it takes a lot of discipline, resilience, and introspection. Most importantly, content isn’t just a one way street. Keep in mind who you’re writing for and you’ll be on a decent path towards authentic content creation.
