A movie is playing in the background. It reminds me of why I seriously need a close friend I see everyday right now. Especially someone that supports my creative goals.
The movie’s title is Naomi and Ely’s No Kiss-List. I know, it’s not Steven Spielberg blockbuster material. It’s kind of teeny-bopper. But it’s very laid back (which I like) and I kind of have a crush on both lead characters.
Yesterday was supposedly the day I compose this blog post. But I think I was a little exhausted from doing the same thing everyday. Routines are not my forte. I also realized that if I really wanted to free my time and spend it more on the things that I think are essential (yes, I’m reading Greg McKeown’s Essentialism), then I shouldn’t be too worried about missing one blog post being posted at the exact same time (which was supposedly 8am today).

After a lot of thinking lately, I discovered that we could discover our strengths through our pattern. Violeta Nedkova talked about patterns paving the way for clarity in her blog post. In addition, I think patterns also tell us how we can leverage our habits.
I tend to have bouts of energy all throughout the day. I mostly cannot wake up late. I sluggishly bring myself up to chores and other activities during the day, and then I have the highest amount of energy at night (hoot, hoot!).
At night, I feel so unbelievably energetic I don’t know what to make of it.
Now that I know what my patterns are, I can proceed to being curious about it. Curiosity is a big thing for creatives. We endlessly feel the need to discover and explore and question everything. It’s not being skeptical. It’s simply being curious.
I can be curious as to why I have more energy in the evenings. What am I eating? What time do I sleep? How long do I sleep? Do I exercise?
As a nurse, I can say all these factors contribute to the overall health and patterns of the human body. They dictate why we do what we do. In every cycle, we see a pattern. When we do figure out this pattern, we are able to come up with ways to tweak the cycle to fit our goals.
So if it’s that easy, why isn’t everyone doing it and why isn’t everyone healthy already?
The simple answer is that we’re humans. We are complicated beings. And try as we might, even though it’s what we’ve always wanted, our patterns can sometimes take over us and hinder us from attaining our goals. Like in Naomi and Ely’s No-Kiss List, shit will always happen (even between best friends).
We have feelings, we have relationships, we have an idea of the life we want. All of these can affect our patterns just as much as what we eat, how we sleep, and when we exercise.
Some say we are the sum of our parts. I think we are the sum of our parts plus the sum of others. We can’t be who we are alone.
