Day 54: The one thing to ask yourself when you’re struggling to break out from the famine

It’s one thing to talk about pain points, it’s another to actually feel them. When you’re literally broke and hungry, all the glamour and fun of being a creative becomes a struggle. But it won’t always be that way.

They say if you keep working yourself up the ladder, you will be successful. But what *is* waiting for you at the top of that ladder? I’ll tell you what. More ladders!

As I often say–and I do believe this–humans don’t ever get satisfied. What looks like success to your past self will only look like a stepping stone to your present self and a something-that-was-bound-to-happen-anyway to your future self.

So getting back to the subject of famine. I know a thing or two about it. You might, too. Most everyone who has ever worked their ass off to survive would know how it’s like. For you, it might be the inability to provide for the people you love. For me, it may or may not be losing electricity and water due to unpaid bills and making do with candlelight in a terribly unromantic way when I was a kid. Nevertheless, everybody suffers from famine and it’s not a question of how much you suffered but how it felt like for you.

It felt like shit.

And yes, you have to eat shit and shit sandwiches to survive. But exactly how many shit sandwiches you have to eat is not what you ask yourself when you’re struggling to break out from Famine City.

The question is: what have you to be thankful for today?

It’s pretty simple but it’s legit AF. When you ask yourself this, you challenge yourself to choose to see the glass half full. And when you’re grateful even for the mere fact that you’re breathing today, you find that bad things do happen to you but they will pass. Your answer to that one question will make you either a better or bitter person.

So, yes. Get out there and count the things you’re thankful for. It’s okay to acknowledge the pain. But it’s important to know that pain isn’t everything—it’s just a part of life and living.
